Installed a squeaky clean, brand new instance of Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, running as an amd64 virtual machine under VirtualBox on my computer. Edited /etc/network/interfaces: appended:: # The hostonly network interface auto eth1 iface eth1 inet dhcp Shut down, snapshot of clean system.
