	The purpose of this experiment is to look at the effect of NH4NO3 addition in an unfenced area.  The experiment is located in field E.  There are 4 different treatments  C, F, H, and I as defined in <A HREF="http://www.cedarcreek.umn.edu/research/methods/nutradd/nutradd.html">fertilization details</A> in the "microplot" strategy.  The plots are 4 by 4 meters and are laid out in an 8 by 8 grid with 1 meter aisles.  For a list of treatments, see the treatment layouts in file <A HREF="http://www.cedarcreek.umn.edu/research/exper/e008/treatment.html">trmte08</A>.  From 1989-1994 plots with fertilizer treatment 1 were treated as complete controls, receiving no nutrients at all.

          As a condition for access to data provided by researchers of the Cedar Creek LTER, I, the data user, agrees to abide by the following code of ethics.
        
        
          
            
              
                I agree to notify the Cedar Creek LTER scientists who gathered data if I would like to use those data in any publication. I acknowledge that these data were gathered by Cedar Creek scientists because they had already perceived the importance of these data for a variety of scientific and societal issues. I will provide them with formal recognition that, at their discretion, may include co-authorship or acknowledgements on publications.
              
            
            
              
                 I realize that the researchers who gathered these data may be using them for scientific analyses, papers or publications that are currently planned or in preparation, and that such activities have precedence over any that I might wish to prepare. In this case, my preparation of any work may be delayed, at the option of the Cedar Creek researchers involved, until their work is completed. 
              
            
            
              
                 Because it may be possible to misinterpret a data set if it is taken out of context, I will seek the assistance and opinion of those Cedar Creek researchers involved in the design of a study and the collection of the data as I analyze the data. Moreover, I realize that this computer data set is not complete, and it may contain errors.          The Cedar Creek Natural History Area is located in Anoka and Isanti counties, approximately 30 miles north of Saint Paul, MN. CCNHA lies at the boundary between prairie and forest. It is a mosaic of uplands dominated by oak savanna, prairie, hardwood forest, pine forests,and abandoned agricultural fields and of lowlands comprised of ash and cedar swamps, acid bogs, marshes, and sedge meadows. Large tracts of the pre-agricultural ecosystems of the region are preserved within its boundaries, as is a successional chronosequence of more than 80 old fields of known history.

	 Fertilization:   Fertilizer is mixed and spread by hand twice a year, once in early May and once in late June.  Each plot gets the fertilizer mixture specified by its fertilizer treatment code.  For a list of fertilizer treatments for each plot, see file  trmte08 .
