DNS Management for DataONE Nodes

Naming of VM Host Hardware
--------------------------
VM hosts, that is, the hardware installations that will be used to host
virtual machines (typically for CNs but also for other supporting services)
are named using a pattern of::
host-<location>-<id>.dataone.org
where:
:<location>:
A common abbreviation for the hosting institution. For example: unm =
University of New Mexico, ucsb = University of California Santa Barbara,
orc = Oak Ridge Campus
:<id>:
An identifier to distinguish between multiple hardware hosts at an
institution. For example "1".
:Examples: host-unm-1.dataone.org, host-ucsb-1.dataone.org
Naming of Coordinating Nodes
----------------------------
Coordinating nodes will be named with a pattern of::
cn-[<env>-]<location>-<id>.dataone.org
where:
:<env>:
An indicator of the :doc:`environment<environments>` in which the node
will be participating. For example, "dev" for development, "sandbox" for
the sandbox, and "stage" for staging. No environment indicator implies
participation in the production environment.
:<location>:
A common abbreviation for the hosting institution. For example: unm =
University of New Mexico, ucsb = University of California Santa Barbara,
orc = Oak Ridge Campus
:<id>:
An identifier to distinguish between multiple hardware CNs at an
institution. For example "1".
Current Situation (mid 2010)
----------------------------
DNS is managed entirely by NCEAS through the servers::
ns1.nceas.ucsb.edu 128.111.220.18
ns2.nceas.ucsb.edu 128.111.220.16
.. Note::
This should change in the future as it is a single point of failure. Need to
investigate commercial solution or perhaps a joint agreement between CN host
organizations to support DNS entries for dataone.org.
